Guide to Shopping Small in Raleigh This Holiday

Ditch the last-minute-Amazon-purchases this holiday season and finally commit to shopping small.

There are so many amazing artists, creators, and entrepreneurs in the local Raleigh area. This city is colorful and bumping, not because of Target or Amazon, because of the local small businesses that are working hard to bring you amazing products and services!

Every holiday season, right around December, everyone starts impulse buying some last-minute gifts from big corporations.

*Cue the guilt of wishing you had planned better and shopped small

This fall, let’s all make an effort to shop small, local businesses in Raleigh, support local creators, and really give thoughtful (and intentional) gifts to our loved ones.

I want to shop small but where do I start?'

Shopping small doesn’t have to be hard, painful, or break the bank. Here are 5 steps to take this fall to stay in budget and support local businesses.

  1. Start at local pop-ups. Lucky for you, Raleigh has so many amazing pop-up markets that give you an amazing way to connect with local business owners.

  2. Plan early (aka right now). Now is the time to be ordering those presents, gifts, or figuring out how to say “I love and appreciate you” to your friends and family this holiday.

  3. Make a budget. Nothing fancy but sit down and really reflect on how much you can (and want to) spend on holiday gifts this season!

  4. Make it simple. Start with a simple hand-written list or (even better) a Google Doc to track who you want to buy for this season, what would really make them feel special, and realistically what is in the budget to spend on them. Then, consult all the business cards you collected at local pop-ups!

  5. Be kind to yourself. Even if you need to do a little last-minute Amazon or Target shopping, even just trying to shop small this season as much as you could is really benefitting local business owners.
